Monika on 60 Minutes: AI in Mental Health
In 2024, Monika was featured on 60 Minutes to speak about the promise and peril of AI in mental health. She highlighted the potential to reach people who might otherwise have limited or no access to care—while also warning that without thoughtful guardrails, these tools risk harming the very people they aim to support.
NPR & National Media Coverage
Monika was quoted in NPR’s national coverage of a 2023 chatbot controversy, after raising early concerns about AI-generated responses being offered to individuals with eating disorders. As Executive Director of MEDA, she provided screenshots showing the chatbot promoting “healthy snack” substitutions—language she flagged as steeped in anti fat bias and harmful to those in and seeking recovery.

Her testimony helped illuminate broader questions of accountability, safety, and oversight in AI-driven mental health tools. The article sparked national conversation around ethical tech, system vulnerability, and the urgent need for safeguards in automated care.
